April 21st was the deadline for submission of candidates’ petitions to School District Clerk Theresa Markley for those seeking a place on the ballot for election to either the school or library board. Three candidates came forward to run for the two seats available on the School Board: Janet Benton, Gregg Bresner and Rob Gursha . Library Board candidates Barbara Lowenthal and Catherine Campbell Nesbit will vie for one slot.
The budgets and candidates are now in place for the May 20th Chappaqua School District and Library elections. The five candidates will participate in the League of Women Voters “Candidates Night” at the Chappaqua Library at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, May 15, live on NCCTV.
As reported in NewCastleNow.org, the Chappaqua Board of Education approved its 2008-2009 spending budget on April 15th. This year’s budget of $ 107,347,134 reflects an increase of 5.25%.
The Chappaqua Library budget figure that will be presented to the voters is $ 2,619,376. This reflects s a 2% decrease over last year’s budget. Pam Thornton, Director of the Chappaqua Library states. “The library’s overall budget request is $2,706,892. This difference between the two amounts is made up from fines and other fees that the library may assess.” Thornton will appear before the Board of Education at its May 6th meeting to answer questions about the budget.
