Dr. Mary Ehrenworth, Deputy Director of the Columbia Teachers College “Reading and Writing Project” and a consultant for Chappaqua schools, makes the case for the critical role reading plays in children’s academic lives—especially books they don’t have to read.
The Project’s belief in—and current research on— the strong correlation between “reading for pleasure” and academic success has brought in-class libraries to Chappaqua’s middle school classrooms as well as in-school time for reading. Ehrenworth will speak to parents of students in K through 8th grade about her work with the Chappaqua school district, how the new literacy periods in the middle school are working, and what parents can do at home to support their children.
Last summer, the Chappaqua Central School District was mentioned in an article in the New York Times entitled, “The Future of Reading—A New Assignment: Pick Books You Like,” by Motoko Rich, August 29, 2009.
