Spotlight on Activities May 16 - May 22

Sunday, May 18: New Castle 10K Race, check-in at 7:30 a.m.at Town Hall; start time: 9:00 a.m., entry fee $20. The Chappaqua Orchestra will wrap up its 49th season with an all-Beethoven concert at 3:00 p.m. in the Horace Greeley High School Auditorium on Sunday, May 18 at 3:00 p.m.; League of Women Voters Spring Luncheon at Kittle House features a talk on the death penalty by David Kaczynski on Wednesday, May 21, at 12:00 p.m. See inside for flyer;

Friday, May 16
Teen movie and pizza: Renowned archeologist, Dr. Indiana Jones, is hired by the U.S. Government to find the Ark of the Covenant, which is believed to hold the Ten Commandments. Unfortunately, agents of Hitler are also after the Ark. “Indiana Jones and the Ark of the Covenant” will be shown from 3:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. with pizza. The event is free and open to grades 5 - 12 at the Chappaqua Library.

Movie and discussion: The Chappaqua Library’s Menus in the Movies series will feature “The Cheese Nun” at 7:00 p.m. A discussion of the film will be led by Carol Durst, food author and film buff, accompanied by homemade desserts. This free series is sponsored by the Friends of the Chappaqua Library.

High school concert: The Horace Greeley Orchestra will perform its spring concert at 7:30 p.m. in the Horace Greeley auditorium.

Saturday, May 17

Bird walk: Saw Mill Rive Audubon will lead a bird walk at Doodletown and Iona Island starting at 6:30 a.m. Doodletown, just south of Bear Mountain State Park and overlooking the Hudson River, is particularly good for spotting spring migrants. Meet at the pullover parking area by Iona Island. Call the Saw Mill River Audubon office at 914-666-6503 for directions.

Bird feed sale: Stock up on high quality bird seed at the bird seed sale on Saturday from 9:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. at the Pruyn Sanctuary in Chappaqua. All sales benefit Saw Mill River Audubon. Visit their website at http://wwwsawmillriveraudubon.org.

Compost bin sale: Compost bins will be on sale from 9 a.m. – 2 p.m., rain or shine, at the Saxon Woods Pool and Park in White Plains. See NewCastleNOW.org calendar for more details.

Carnival: A May Carnival sponsored by the Horace Greeley Class of 2010 will be held on the Bell School fields from 12:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.

Monday, May 19

Middle school concert: The Seven Bridges Middle School Orchestra Concert will perform at 7:30 p.m. in the Seven Bridges Theatre.

CERT meeting: All meetings are held in the town hall assembly room from 7:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. All are welcome.

Millwood Board of Fire Commissioners hear needs study expert, broadcast live from Town Hall at 7:30 p.m.

Exhibition and discussion: Pat Ashforth and Steve Plummer, designers of mathematical knitwear, or perhaps, mathematical designers of knitwear, have created designs that are simple geometric shapes combined to make elaborate patterns. Their discussion of their work, Wooly Thoughts, will be presented at 7:30 p.m. at the Chappaqua Library. This free exhibition and discussion is cosponsored by the Westchester Knitting Guild.

School board, library board and budget vote: The election for the Chappaqua Board of Education and the Board of Trustees of the Chappaqua Library and the vote on the school and library budgets will take place from 7:00 a.m. – 9:00 p.m. at the Horace Greeley High School gym.

Garden lecture: At the First Congregational Church at 12:45 p.m. the Chappaqua Garden Club will present “Have your flower garden and eat it too!” a free lecture by Vivian Utko, inventive chef and former director of the herb garden at John Jay Homestead. High school choral concert. The Horace Greeley High School Chorus will perform its Spring Concert in the Horace Greeley auditorium starting at 7:30 p.m.

New Castle Memorial Day Parade steps off from King Street and Ridgewood Avenue at 11:00 a.m. The parade will follow King Street into downtown Chappaqua, before turning left onto South Greeley Avenue, where it will proceed to the plaza in front of the railroad station.
