UPDATE: Well-deserved criticism for proposed superintendent search process

To the Editor:

The search for the new Chappaqua superintendent is drawing well-deserved criticism because the outlined process, as it stands, heavily favors continuation of the status quo.

What is the status quo?  A board and administration that appear to pay lip service to community input and concerns.  Incomplete communications from school leaders on topics of great importance to the community. Longstanding tense relationships between school leaders and all sectors of the community that sometimes devolve into the adversarial.

Giving priority to a superintendent candidate from within our school system, rather than conducting an extensive, nationwide search, practically insures that the issues that divide and weaken our school district will not be addressed in a substantive manner.  A strong candidate from outside the district would bring to the table fresh ideas, new perspectives and would ideally have the courage to challenge the status quo and institute much needed reform.

If you don’t like what you are hearing about the superintendent search, please take a moment and send an email to our school board (email: .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address)) encouraging them to rethink the superintendent search process.  Copy your email to NewCastleNow.org (email: .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address)) so the depth of community sentiment on this topic can be gauged.
