Projects on the horizon for downtown Chappaqua

Editor’s note: In response to written questions from NewCastleNOW.org, Elise Mottel, deputy town supervisor and chair of the Downtown Steering Committee, submitted the following update on plans for downtown Chappaqua.

There are three main projects that the Downtown Steering Committee (DSC) would like to implement first.

1.  Parking lot behind Susan Lawrence.

2.  Parking lot behind South Greeley.

3.  Signage.

The first two projects would create additional parking spaces in the downtown as well as create areas for merchant parking. The Town is in the process of contacting certain property owners to request parking easements. The timing of the projects depends on the response of the parking owners to the Town’s requests. The DSC has made recommendations to the Town Board regarding signage in the Downtown and is in the process of obtaining the cost estimates for signage.

The Department of Transportation (DOT) has reviewed the plans for the downtown which include, among other things, crosswalks, a stop sign at the intersection of King Street and North Greeley, changing diagonal parking on Lower King, and creating a traffic island on South Greeley [between Bell’s field and the town rec field]. The Town’s engineering department is in the process of revising the plans to conform to the changes suggested by DOT and the revised plans will be resubmitted to DOT for concept approval.  It is difficult to know the timing of DOT’s review.

The Town is examining burying utility wires in the downtown. The cost of burying the Con Edison wires is $1,000 per linear foot. The DSC is examining ways to reduce the costs of burying the underground utilities by reducing the area where the wires would be buried.

The Town Board is discussing the repair and/or redesign of the Gazebo. This would involve raising the grading of the site and restoring the nearby stream. This is in the early stages, and no costs have yet been obtained for this project.
