Reader’s Digest Pegasus quartet to continue to support cupola in Chappaqua

Last November, Reader’s Digest Corporation revealed their plans move from their long-time campus in Chappaqua to White Plains and New York City. To add insult to injury, they announced in January that the four horses that support the cupola of their soon-to-be former headquarters would fly away with them. See “Pegasi to fly from Reader’s Digest cupola,” NewCastleNOW.org, January 6, 2010.
However, Reader’s Digest President and CEO Mary Berner has had a change of heart. In a letter to Town Supervisor Barbara Gerrard this week, she stated that the four Pegasi would remain behind to continue to support the cupola. In the same letter, she acknowledged that Reader’s Digest is also contemplating donating the historic Penelope Jencks sculpture that is installed on the campus to the New Castle Historical Society.
Gray Williams, New Castle town historian, rejoiced in the news. “I am delighted that the Reader’s Digest Association has decided to allow the iconic Pegasus figures on the original headquarters building to remain where they are. This decision well reflects the long record of generosity and public-spiritedness of the Reader’s Digest, and it will greatly benefit our community.”
