Review: Lila Downs in concert

The distinctly soulful, emotion-filled voice heard in the movie, “Freda,” about the relationship between Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera, is that of Lila Downs.

With that introduction to American audiences, it is incomprehensible to me why the Mexican American singer, Lila Downs (pronounced LEE-La) remains relatively unknown to so many.

Downs, who spends time in both Oaxcca, Mexico and the United States is an extraordinary vocalist exploring territory where few artists dare to venture. Her highly original approach draws from Mexican cumbia, jazz, ranchero, blues, Mexican polka, Mayan, Zapotec and Mixtec folk melodies and occasionally American pop music.

On stage Downs is nothing short of a powerhouse of earth-woman energy and passion.  Her music not only touches your heart and soul, but also makes you think. She sings of immigrants crossing the border out of desperation, the minimum wage, the issues of social justice, classism and racism and love.

Attending her Monday night’s concert at Town Hall in New York City was an unforgettable experience. The music hall was set on fire by her electrifying presence and vocal virtuosity.  Adding to the intensity of her impassioned performance, a large screen flashed striking images reflecting affirmation of Mexican life and culture overhead. Serendipitously, it was September 15, Mexican Independence Day.

The singer was accompanied by her group of very accomplished musicians on the harp, vihuela, violin, coros, cajón, accordion, guitarron and other assorted percussion instruments indigenous to Latin America. Many selections were featured from her new CD, “Shake Away.”  Among the most appealing were Justicia, Black Magic Woman and especially Yo Envido el Viento.  Along with all of her impressive recordings, it is most definitely recommended.
