Victory for Greeley’s varsity girls softball team in first scrimmage

by Robert Sherman

The Horace Greeley High School girls softball team hosted Clarkstown South in their first scrimmage of the 2008 season on Thursday April 3.  Greeley fielded seven returning varsity players and registered a three to nothing victory.

Both teams featured strong pitching and fielding, but Greeley senior infielder Kailyn Antoncic sealed the victory when with two opposing runners on second and third and one out in the fourth inning, she stabbed a line drive between second and first to halt the Clarkstown rally. One of the more exciting plays of the game featured a successful pick-off at first base by catcher Kristen Guernier with assists by Antoncic and first baseman Tess Sherman.

The Borgeest sisters, Erika and Emily, shared mound duties giving up a total of two hits and no runs.

Greeley looked strong heading into their first games.
