Westchester County property owners who have been paying sewer taxes, but have a septic system, can now get reimbursed up to $600 over six years for septic system maintenance.

“We hope this new law will help many families in these financially difficult times and will also encourage proper maintenance of septic systems, which is important for the environment,” said County Executive Andy Spano in a press release.

The reimbursement covers septic system work performed from Sept. 3, 2008 until Sept. 2, 2014. Property owners can receive up to $300 every three years for a pump-out of a septic tank and up to $275 every six years for a septic system inspection. The inspection and pump-out can be done at the same time.

Currently there are approximately 7,000 property owners in 13 county sewer districts who have septic systems and may be eligible to claim this reimbursement. To find out if your property is eligible, property owners should check their town tax bill, which will indicate whether the property is paying a sewer district tax. You can also visit the county’s interactive website at http://www.westchestergov.com/map or call 2-1-1. The application for reimbursement and a brochure explaining the program are available for download on the county’s website.

Applications for reimbursement must be accompanied by a copy of a paid invoice for services and a property tax bill with proof of tax payment showing that the property is subject to Westchester County sewer district taxes. Reimbursement will only be made for services performed by licensed professional engineers and registered architects, and by septic collectors and septic contractors licensed by Westchester County.
