***News Flash: Volleyball team to practice at Seven Bridges next week. See inside.

Stadium Construction from the Horse’s Mouth

I asked the stadium construction crew, if I had to pick a finish date in a betting pool what date should I pick. They predicted that they would be finished by this Friday. I asked if they meant the home side and they said “No, both home and visitor stands.”  So according to the men doing the job, there will be new seating and plenty of room for Quaker Football Fans to come out and root for the 2008 Quakers.  Come and be lead by….

The Cheerleaders – Who Will Be There

Despite unfounded speculation that there would not be a cheerleading squad, based perhaps on last year’s experience where there was no squad at the start of the season, Athletic Director Steve Young says the number of people signed up for cheerleading indicates the squad will be ready for the start of the season.

Gym Floor—Finishing Started

Head Custodian and Varsity Boys Basketball Coach Dave Fernandes and AD Steve Young had concerns about the floor “cupping” (warping to the layman) after the repair work started.  They had the flooring company representative in last week to examine the problem. After moisture measurements, the rep concluded that the sanding process would remedy the problem. Both Young & Fernandes were satisfied with the level of expertise shown by the flooring company.

Fernandes had hoped that a new floor could have been put in, but the circumstances and experts didn’t justify this being done.  Still the district is essentially getting a completely refurbished floor that would have cost about $400,000, and it’s almost entirely paid by insurance.

In separate conversations, both Fernandes and Young mentioned that the finished floors would sport a new look when the lines, logos and varnish are applied.  Fernandes would like to paint the complex, but doesn’t know if there will be time before school starts. “First we have to get the floors done.”

The Creek Runs Deep

By the way the creek behind the gym has been dredged to help prevent a reoccurrence of the Hurricane Floyd and July 4th gym floor floods.  Further work such as installing a second culvert pipe and additional dredging will be done later in the year in the effort to insure floor floods don’t occur.  Just thought I should have titled an article the “Creeking Floor.”

Lacrosse – The Empty Ne(s)t

Despite the steady publication of articles and whispers stating that coaches have applied or are applying for the vacant head lacrosse coach and one rumor that the job was filled, no one has submitted any paperwork as of this date.  The job remains open.

Soccer (or Football as it known in the rest of the world) Update
I cornered kicked Head Soccer Coach Bob Oddo at the soccer camp being held at Horace Greeley on Wednesday and pressured him into a promise to give me a soccer season outlook after he has had time to look at his squad. The soccer season starts this Friday.

****This Just In! ****
Volleyball Venue Change –
Athletic Director Steve Young announced that Tony Castagna, Head Custodian of Seven Bridges and his crew were able to get some work done ahead of time to enable the Volleyball team to practice at Seven Bridges next week instead of having to go to Purchase.  Big thanks to Tony and his team - Way to go!
