Summer scholarships available from Saw Mill River Audubon to pursue environmental studies

February 15, 2008

Saw Mill River Audubon is offering summer scholarships for adults and students to pursue environmental studies. The scholarships are not based on financial need. They are awarded based on the interest in the environment that the applicant has demonstrated through schoolwork, volunteer work and other activities.

Students ages 13 to 17 may apply for Larry Light Memorial Scholarships to attend summer environmental study programs or camps. These scholarships were established by the Light family and friends in 1980. Examples of programs funded in the past include environmental study trips, college level environmental classes and camps with a primary focus on environmental study or natural history.

Saw Mill River Audubon’s Adult Scholarships Program provides funds for adults to attend environmental education or study programs. The goal of this program is to provide training for teachers and other adults involved in science or environmental education with youth. Several local educators have attended environmental education classes at Pace University and Audubon Ecology Workshops. They are looking for people who will give back in some way to the Audubon’s work here in Westchester.

The scholarships’ awards will take into account the cost of the program proposed as well as the applicant’s previous involvement in environmental action. Applications can be downloaded from the website at http://www.sawmillriveraudubon.org or you can contact their office at (914) 666-6503. The deadline for all scholarship applications is March 15, 2008. All applicants will be notified of decisions by April 1, 2008.
