Flood Waters Reign over Sports Rumor Mill

Girls volleyball cancelled?  Not.

The July 4 flood waters and the damage to the flooring of the Horace Greeley Gym complex have got the rumor mill going with false reports that the volleyball season is being called off due to the damage and the fact that the floor will not be repaired in time. Like all rumors no one seems to know where this one started, but Athletic Director Steve Young was quick to put an end to this unfounded report.

After expressing bewilderment over how this fish story got started in the first place, Young stated in a telephone interview that “The Varsity and JV volleyball season remains intact and although the gym conditions will force some changes in camp, try-out and practice sites, there is no truth to the rumor that the season is being cancelled.”

In consultation with Varsity Coach Yvette Sullivan and JV Coach Gina Streany, Young made venue adjustments to insure the volleyball team is able to get its season underway with little impact from the loss of the gym. Young outlined the following plan that will make use of Seven Bridges and SUNY Purchase facilities.

Gold Medal Squared Volleyball Camp

Seven Bridge Middle School will be the substitute site for the program’s Gold Medal Squared Volleyball Camp scheduled Monday, Aug. 18 to Thursday, August 21 .

Volleyball tryouts and practices

The pre-season tryouts and practices will start at Seven Bridges, beginning Friday, Aug. 22 and Saturday, Aug. 23 and then continue at SUNY Purchase the following week, Aug. 25 to Aug. 29. Coach Sullivan will provide the practice times sometime next week.

Young and the program’s coaches will monitor the situation with the gym floor repair work now underway and make site adjustments as needed. Young was confident that the season would be a good one and that every step was being taken to minimize the volleyball team’s displacement due to the damaged floors and repair work.

Speaking of water - Greeley swimmers update

The team most able to handle situations with water, the swim team, will have their first practice on Friday, Aug. 22 from 9:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. at Manhattanville College. Team members are expected to meet Coach Abulencia in front of the Greeley Gym at 8:00 a.m. The bus will depart Greeley promptly at 8:30 a.m.

Construction and repair work

Visitors to the Horace Greeley sport complex will in encounter a bee hive of construction activity both inside and out. The floor repairs at the gym complex are ongoing, installation of new lockers is just finishing up in the locker rooms, the roof is being repaired and the construction of the new home team and visitor stand are in progress. There were earlier repairs to the parking lots which are now staging areas for some of the other work underway.

“Let’s be careful out there!”
Daniel J Travanti, Hill Street Blues

Visitors are reminded to be careful while on the grounds as the work involves heavy machinery and parts. Although all the work in progress makes the school look like a scene from a Richard Scary book, every evening there a number of runners and walkers on the track and tennis players using the courts. Just remember to exercise caution when driving and walking through.
