The New Castle Sustainability Advisory Board and the Chappaqua Library are co-sponsoring a panel discussion and audience Q&A tonight, June 13, starting at 7:30 p.m. to inform residents about how alternative energy can save you big money while protecting our environment and supporting the U.S. economy. This free event will take place in the library theatre at 195 South Greeley Avenue, Chappaqua, New York, and is open to the public.

During 2011, the U.S. Treasury and New York State are offering significant grants to homes and businesses that begin using clean energy. At this evening’s event, we will hear from experts in Solar Energy (Mercury Solar), Geothermal Energy (Earth To Air, New York), and Combined Heat and Power Energy (BluePrint Energy Group).

Issues that will be covered tonight

How can I save money and the environment?

The alternative energy sources that will be demonstrated can significantly lower or eliminate purchases of oil, gas and electricity. While the alternatives cost money to install, federal and state governments offer financial grants to help offset costs, and the savings will more than pay for the rest.

How do I find out about government incentives and how to get them?

The experts at the talk will discuss government incentives and how easy it is to get them.

Does my home really impact the environment?

Studies conducted by the New Castle Sustainability Advisory Board show that New Castle homes account for 52% of total carbon emissions in the town. By switching to alternative fuels and spreading the word about alternatives, you will make a big difference.

If I switch to alternative fuels, what will happen if I don’t generate enough energy?

All of the products to be discussed are tried, tested and being used by homes and businesses throughout the world. Your provider’s job is to make sure you never have a problem. For example, even when you produce solar energy, you are still attached to the grid so that you can buy electricity if needed or automatically sell it to the electric company if your solar panels generate too much.

I have lots of trees around my house, can I really use solar?

Solar panels generate electricity from direct sunlight. Speak to the solar expert at the talk and give him your address. He’ll take a quick look with Google maps and let you know if solar is feasible.

What is geothermal energy?

It’s a way to extract heat from the earth to warm your house and hot water in the winter, and to deposit heat in the earth in the summer to cool your house. It’s a way to eliminate your oil or gas bill.

What is Combined Heat and Power (CHP) energy?

CHP is an energy solution that uses a special kind of generator to create electricity for your home. The free by-product is heat, which is used to heat your home during winter, and can be used to heat a pool or hot tub during the summer. While the fuel for the generator is natural gas, it is more efficient than buying electricity from the electric company
