Teen librarian and cineaste Zahra Baird has put together a list of great books for Black History Month, along with brief descriptions of each. She has also included details of the Chappaqua Library’s “College Test Prep Program”—take a test stress-free, have it analyzed—plus, events for teens over the February Staycation, some dreamed up by the library, others by the New Castle rec department. * Chasing Lincoln’s Killer - Swanson, James L. (Children’s and Young Adult)
This third-person narrative about the events that happened on the fateful night of April 14, 1865 is a fast-paced thriller about the pursuit and capture of John Wilkes Booth: a wild twelve-day chase through the streets of Washington, D.C., across the swamps of Maryland, and into the forests of Virginia.
* Marching For Freedom : Walk Together, Children, and Don’t You Grow Weary - Partridge, Elizabeth. (Children’s and Young Adult)
This book explores the role that children played in propelling the Civil Rights Movement forward through the eyes of young demonstrators. It combines effective and meaningful archival photographs, quotes, poems, and songs.

The book is divided into nine innings, each covering a topic relevant to the Negro Leagues, such as the owners, the barnstorming games against top-flight white teams, and the process that culminated with Jackie Robinson becoming the first black man to play in the majors in the modern era. The story of the rise and fall of baseball’s Negro.

* George Washington : A Biographical Companion - Grizzard, Frank E. (Adult Biography)
This easily browsable encyclopedia offers an A-Z retrospective of George Washington’s life, career, and historical significance, based in large part on Washington’s own words and those of his contemporaries. More than a companion for those reading about Washington’s life, this work is also an interesting and sometimes detailed reference work on Colonial and Revolutionary America.
