May 31“Miss Representation,” documentary on sexism in the media @ Temple Beth El 7:00pm
May 31by Susan Pecker, Sheila Bernson and Jennifer Mebes Flagg
The League of Women Voters® of New Castle and Temple Beth El of Northern Westchester will co-sponsor a screening of the documentary, Miss Representation, on Thursday, May 31, 2012 at 7:00 p.m. at Temple Beth El, 220 South Bedford Road, Chappaqua, N.Y. A discussion led by Martha Zornow, Principal of Seven Bridges Middle School, will follow.
Premiered at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival, Miss Representation challenges the media’s limited and often disparaging portrayals of women and girls, which make it difficult for women to achieve leadership positions and for the average woman to feel powerful herself. In a society where media is the most persuasive force shaping cultural norms, the collective message that our young women and men overwhelmingly receive is that a woman’s value and power lie in her youth, beauty and sexuality, and not in her capacity as a leader.
Women make up 51 percent of the U.S. population but only 17 percent of Congress. That puts the U.S. at 94th in the world for the percentage of women in elected office. The film exposes how mainstream media contribute to the under-representation of women in positions of power and influence in America. Miss Representation includes stories from teenage girls and provocative interviews with politicians, journalists, entertainers, activists and academics like Condoleezza Rice, Lisa Ling, Nancy Pelosi, Katie Couric, Rachel Maddow and Gloria Steinem.
Tickets for this event are $10 (student price: $3) and available online at bethelnw.wufoo.com/forms/miss-representation-a-documentary-film/ or at the door for $15 (student price: $3). Parents may want to look at www.commonsensemedia.org for age appropriateness.
For more information regarding the film, please go to www.missrepresentation.org. For more information regarding this event please contact Sheila Bernson at .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address).

10:00am - 4:00pm
$15 SUV or larger all other cars $10
We are writing to inform you about the Class of 2014 Student Government’s latest fundraising project. We will be hosting a car wash on May 19th, 2012 in the Bell School parking lot from 10-4.
In addition to this, a drive for supplies will be held in the days leading up to the car wash. We ask that you support the sophomore class and donate some old towels, buckets or sponges. These can be dropped off at HGHS in boxes located outside of the Counseling Office.
We also plan to involve the sophomore community by creating teams, led by members of the Student Government. The teams will help wash the cars as they come through. Each team will consist of approximately 10 students (including members of Student Government). The teams will work in shifts throughout the duration of the event. We will be announcing these plans to the sophomore class in an upcoming assembly.
Encourage your sophomore to sign up for a team
Donate supplies for the car wash
Bring your car to Bell on 5/19
With your help, we hope to make this car wash not only a successful fundraiser for the Class of 2014, but also a fun and exciting way for the sophomore class to work together for a great cause.
Sincerely,
The Class of 2014 Student Government

Lyme Disease Workshop by Webinar 7:00-8:30 p.m. Help for those with Lyme disease
May 17Thursday
Helping Those with Lyme Disease and Other Tick Borne Illnesses to be Healthy Again!
The webinar will focus on how to support your immune system during the disease process through immune supportive nutrition. There will also be guidance in how to prevent infection or to reduce the severity of an infection.
Spring is the time when ticks are prevalent and boosting your immunity is key, particularly if you have allergies or suffer from residual Lyme symptoms. Learn an integrated approach to boost your immunity and improve your overall health including:
· an immune boosting diet;
· nutritional supplements for energy and stamina, especially important while on antibiotic treatment; and
· chemical free household products to reduce your toxic load.
All of these are even more important when healing from a tick borne illness.
Join us for an enlightening discussion with Joanne Knight, dietician and health coach, and Linda Degelsmith, Registered Nurse, who specializes in natural approaches to health and wellness for children and their families.
RSVP to Linda Degelsmith at .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) or 238-9169, so that we can forward you the information to log onto the webinar.

Westchester Oratorio Society: Mendelssohn’s “Elijah” at Temple Beth El 3:00 pm
May 6Westchester Oratorio Society to present Mendelssohn’s “Elijah” at Temple Beth El in Chappaqua on May 6
On Sunday afternoon, May 6, Benjamin Niemczyk and the Westchester Oratorio Society will present a 15th Anniversary performance of Mendelssohn’s “Elijah” at Temple Beth El of Northern Westchester in Chappaqua, reprising the group’s debut concert in Bedford.
Mendelssohn’s Old Testament oratorio “Elijah” is widely considered to be the composer’s masterpiece and the greatest oratorio of the 19th Century. Mr. Niemczyk, the group’s Artistic Director and Conductor, said he was looking forward to performing the work in the Congregation’s distinctive wooden Sanctuary which he called “inspiring.” Designed by noted 20th Century architect Louis Kahn, the space was built to evoke the old Synagogues of Eastern Europe.
Mr. Niemczyk, who is a Brooklyn resident and a founding member of C4 (Choral Composer/Conductor Collective, www.c4ensemble.org), the nation’s largest new music choral ensemble, pointed to the oratorio society’s tradition of working with some of the finest young musicians in the NYC area, noting that the group’s debut performance of “Elijah” featured Mezzo-Soprano Josie Perez who went on to establish a major career.
The 15th Anniversary performance will feature Baritone, Matthew Singer, who will perform the role of Elijah, with Mezzo-Soprano Roseanne Ackerley, Alto Alice Dryden, Tenor Christopher Ellmann, Baritone Eric Burkhardt and Soprano Hattie Herman. The orchestra, contracted by Kallie Ciechomski, a young accomplished performer in her own right, is comprised of some of the most talented players working in Manhattan. For Mr. Niemczyk, the young musicians provide an exceptional level of energy. “They are a talented group for whom the opportunity to perform a full oratorio is still an adventure,” the conductor noted.
Now in its fifth year, the Westchester Oratorio Society is known for its local performances of early music, traditional choral masterworks and contemporary pieces, as well as its appearances in the New York metropolitan area including with Rebel Baroque Orchestra and the Brooklyn Philharmonic at Carnegie Hall, the Brooklyn Academy of Music and the Cathedral of St. John the Divine. Founded in South Salem in 1997, the group rehearses on Tuesday evenings in Katonah.
Temple Beth El of Northern Westchester is located at 220 South Bedford Road in Chappaqua. The performance begins at 3 PM and a reception will follow. For more information or to purchase tickets call 914-763-9389, email .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) or visit the group’s website at www.westchesteroratorio.org. CHAPPAQUA, N.Y. This spring the Chappaqua Interfaith Council is holding a Family Fun Day. People of all faiths can come together for a relaxed afternoon of shared food, games and music, and community service. The event will be held on Sunday, April 29 (1 - 4 pm, rain or shine) at Wagon Road Camp, 431 Quaker Road in Chappaqua. It is free to the public. All ages—from young children to high schoolers, adults and sprightly seniors—are encouraged to attend. Please mark your calendar for the event:
• 1 pm — Kickoff Barbecue. We supply the hamburgers, hotdogs, snacks and drinks. You are encouraged to bring a picnic blanket and something to share such as cookies or fruit.
• All Afternoon — Music and Sports. Join in a soccer game, toss around a frisbee or shoot some hoops…. Or just sit back and listen to good music! The Walkabout Clearwater Chorus, founded by Pete Seeger over 20 years ago to promote environmental awareness and social action through song, has volunteered to perform during the afternoon.
• 2 - 3:30 — Community Service to Help Wagon Road Camp. Get to know neighbors of other faiths as you clean the raised vegetable beds; paint the outside of the athletic shed; or spread wood chips in the garden, under the high ropes course and elsewhere. Please bring your gloves!
• 3:30 - 4 pm — Music Sing-along, Drinks and Cookies. Head back to the main field for more music, snacks and conversation.
“This new event will be an opportunity for people of various faiths to share a time of fun and a meal together,” says Reverend Tom Lenhart, Senior Minister of the First Congregational Church and chair of the Chappaqua Interfaith Council. “Wagon Road Camp is generously donating its facilities so we have a great location. And since our Council is committed to faith-in-action projects to improve life in our community, we offered to help Wagon Road with its spring spruce-up.”
The Chappaqua Interfaith Council also sponsors a Thanksgiving Interfaith Service and Community Meal; this year’s celebration will be on Sunday, November 18 at St. John and St. Mary’s Church. In March, in conjunction with the Chappaqua Library, the Council sponsored “Mark Twain and The Minister, “ the second talk in its new series, “Challenges to Faith in Our World.”

Literacy Adventure: Leonard Park Tea House in Mt. Kisco 6:30pm
Apr 20Mount Kisco Child Care Center to Celebrate Week of the Young Child™
Mount Kisco, NY – (April 5, 2012) – As part of the national Week of the Young Child™ (April 22-
28, 2012) celebrated across the country, Mount Kisco Child Care Center (MKCCC) will recognize
young children and all those who make a difference in children’s lives.
“All children deserve the highest quality education to help prepare them for life,” said Dottie Jordan,
Executive Director, MKCCC. “We are excited to participate in a celebration of educating young
children and the joy these children bring to the community.”
This year’s Week of the Young Child™ theme is Early Years Are Learning Years®. As part of
the celebration, MKCCC will host a special Literacy Adventure on Friday, April 20 beginning
at 6:30 p.m. at the tea house at Leonard Park in Mount Kisco. Literacy Adventures bring together
families and children to share books and stories to build a life-long love of reading. This month we
will be reading the story Rainbow Fish by Mark Pfister. Light dinner will be served as toddlers and
preschoolers are invited to participate in an art activity.
Young children and their families depend on high-quality education and care, which help children
get a great start and bring lasting benefits to the Northern Westchester County community. Week
of the Young Child™ is a time to recognize the importance of early learning and early literacy, and
to celebrate the teachers and policies that bring early childhood education to young children.
In addition to the Literacy Adventure, local businesses including Ladle of Love, Quaker Hill Tavern
Table Local Market, and TASTE Gourmet, will support MKCCC’s celebrations, featuring recipes
from the Center’s Feed Me Fresh comprehensive nutrition program. Mount Kisco Public Library will
display MKCCC childrens’ artwork throughout April.
The Week of the Young Child,™ sponsored by the National Association for the Education of Young
Children (NAEYC), is an opportunity for early childhood programs across the country, including
child care and Head Start programs, preschools, and elementary schools, to hold activities to bring
awareness to the needs of young children.

Character in the Balance: Exploring the Causes and Consequences of Compassion
With Professor David DeSteno
Location: Temple Beth El, 220 South Bedford Road, Chappaqua
Date: Sunday, April 15, 2012, 4 PM
Event: Professor David DeSteno, author of the book
Out of Character: Surprising Truths About the Liar, Cheat, Sinner (and Saint) Lurking in All of Us
and the director of the Social Emotions Lab at Northeastern
University, will be speaking at Temple Beth El on Sunday, April 15.
His topic will be “Character in the Balance: Exploring the Causes and
Consequences of Compassion,” and he will be exploring questions such
as, “When should we be compassionate? When is compassion a vice?
How and why do we develop compassion?”
Dr. DeSteno’s work is frequently featured in The New York Times, Wall
Street Journal, Newsweek, Boston Globe and NPR.
He has dedicated his career to exploring the multifaceted ways in which
emotional experiences shape decision-making and social behavior. His
lab is internationally renowned for its finding and paradigms related to
studying social emotions and moral behavior in real-time.
As Rabbi Geoffrey A. Mitelman, the Associate Rabbi at Temple Beth
El, said, “Dr. DeSteno’s work is at the cutting edge in the exploration of
how we become better human beings. With science and religion so often
being presented as enemies, this conversation will bring religion and
science together to help us strengthen our moral sense.”
This event is free of charge and open to the public.
