Our “local” team is going to the Superbowl. This Sunday, make your party spread local, too! Come get everything you need for your game-watching party at the Farmers Market this Saturday: pickles, hummus, organic sausages, delicate veal pastrami, artisanal cheeses, and lots of organic, locally farmed meats from both Stone Barns and Gaia’s Breath for chilis and stews. The market runs from 9:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturdays at St. Mary’s next to Bell.

I’ve been making my own pesto for years—with everything from arugula to nettles—and so have most of my friends, so when I first discovered Buddhapesto and brought it to market, people wondered what all the fuss was about.

I just came back from walking the dog and was chilled to the bone, when I got an email from Fork & Glass describing the soup they are making for Saturday’s market: “pureed cauliflower with a touch of milk that has been steeped in laurel leaves.” And just like that I was all warm and tingly inside.

Raise your hand if you’ve ever tried veal pastrami! After 20 years of food writing I’ve never tried it. So I’m very excited that Gaia’s Breath will be selling some, along with their organic greens, at the Chappaqua Farmers Market this week.

Chef Tony Scarpati’s neighbors wrote in to report that during the Hallowsnowstorm of a few weeks ago, the Scarpati house was a center of fun, chicken soup and artistry. His Ridgewood Terrace neighbors sent in photos of his artist’s response to the premature snowfall that blanketed Halloween. See what he created in “Read more…”

Usually when I come across a recipe that really catches my eye, the ingredient list is often too long or rife with hard to find items. Not so with David Tanis’ recipe for “cream of mushroom soup from scratch” in this week’s Dining section of the New York Times.

First, I want to thank all of you who braved the elements last week to shop at the market. A couple of our farmers got stuck getting home and probably spent 10 hours on the road that day. So each and every one of your purchases really meant something to the vendors.

Brrrr! This is the time of year when I start thinking about proteins and roasted vegetables. The smell of a simmering stew or an herb and garlic-studded rib-roast in the oven does wonders for my morale as the days get shorter and my ConEd bills get bigger.
