Chef Tony Scarpati’s neighbors wrote in to report that during the Hallowsnowstorm of a few weeks ago, the Scarpati house was a center of fun, chicken soup and artistry.  His Ridgewood Terrace neighbors sent in photos of his artist’s response to the premature snowfall that blanketed Halloween.  See what he created in “Read more…”

Usually when I come across a recipe that really catches my eye, the ingredient list is often too long or rife with hard to find items.  Not so with David Tanis’ recipe for “cream of mushroom soup from scratch” in this week’s Dining section of the New York Times.

First, I want to thank all of you who braved the elements last week to shop at the market.  A couple of our farmers got stuck getting home and probably spent 10 hours on the road that day. So each and every one of your purchases really meant something to the vendors.

In this very difficult time for farmers throughout the Hudson Valley region we ask for your patience and understanding: our market will temporarily look a little less flush in the “greens” department.  Morgiewicz Produce remains under water thanks to Irene who didn’t spare any punches in parts of Black Dirt country.  Thousands of acres of onions, which the area is known for, have been decimated.

It seems like only a few weeks ago that we were just opening the market for the summer, looking over tables of lovely greens, radishes and spring garlic. Now, in this the last week of August, those tables are spilling over with the bounty – tomatoes, squash, potatoes, corn, eggplant, peaches, plums, the first new apples, and much more.

Eggplant of every shape and color to grill, fry, roast or pickle!

Last week one of our shoppers bought an amazing assortment of eggplant. She was beaming when she stopped by the market tent to show me what was in her market basket.  Some of the eggplant were pendulous and white and looked like the eggs a Dr. Seuss creature might hatch.  Others were striated purple, skinny and long. Some were pear-shaped and glossy, others shaped like a pin-cushion, creases and all.

Working on the farm this past week I was inspired by the snap peas, thus the “Grilled Sugar Snap Pea Salsa” recipe!  It’s something that can go
very well under a piece of grilled fish or on a buffet table for dipping. Visit me this week at the Chappaqua Farmers Market for tips and ideas for this weekend’s BBQs. (Hint:  Don’t over-flip, don’t press, and let the meat rest once you remove it from the grill.)

Late yesterday afternoon we found Adam Strahl putting the finishing touches on his new ice cream, sandwiches, soup and salad place, “Local,” at 75 South Greeley Avenue. He’d been at it since morning, and for months before.  To a family coming off the Route 120 bridge in a mini-van whose driver hollered, “Hey, when do you open?” Strahl shouted, “This Wednesday! 10 to 8 weekdays, 10 to 10 on weekends!”  “We’ll see you then!” promised the driver.
