Registration now open for Fall field hockey clinics

Registration is now open for field hockey clinics in the Fall.  The New Castle Field Hockey Association (NCFHA) will run high quality, structured developmental programs for 3rd/4th graders and 5th/6th graders on Saturdays, from Sept. 6th through Nov. 8th.  The sessions will take place during the afternoon at the Horace Greeley High School at the Barn Field.  Specific times will be determined over the coming weeks, with consideration given to avoid conflicts with lacrosse and soccer programs.

The morning after the June 9 Senior Athletic Awards Dinner, Athletic Director Pete Kuczma wrote to families of the athletes, “After being away for 10 years and returning to this event I could not have been prouder to see this fine tradition still with the same flare and excellence as before.  This will always be a way to complete the athletic experience by bringing parents and athletes together to review the accomplishments.  It was my pleasure to work with all of you.  Thanks for all of your help.”

Wetlands cause turf committee to turn from Competition Field to “Field C” for resurfacing

Three years into their efforts to bring artificial turf to the Greeley Competition Field, the Chappaqua Turf Committee has learned that the cost of wetlands mitigation at the site would add about $500,000 to the $2 million price tag.  Now, instead, committee members are looking to make over Greeley athletic field C in turf.

Opening their 2012 season, the G-men arrived at Brewster—with many new faces and missing some old familiar ones—full of hope. The Bears have a new turf field with lights so the Quakers’ new day started at night. It was a game that proved this year‘s team has the courage and determination to fight despite all the hurdles and obstacles placed in their way before they ever got a chance to take the field of play. They never quit before and they didn’t quit this night either.

Athletic Director Steve Young leaves CCSD for position in New Rochelle

This week, the school district’s Athletic Director Steve Young announced that he will be stepping down from his position. On Monday, Young informed coaches and Phys Ed staff by email that will be taking a job with the New Rochelle school district this fall as Director of Health, Physical Education and Athletics. Young’s last day as Athletic Director for CCSD is Friday, August 10.

This year, John Orozco, a Bronx native and a veteran of Chappaqua’s World Cup Gymnastics competed for gold along with the U.S.A. Olympic Men’s Gymnastics squad.  Team U.S.A., which was billed as a possible medal contender going into the qualifiers, lived up to the hype, taking the overall lead with a score of 275.342, ahead of powerhouses Russia and China.

Board of ed approves Tim Sullivan as Interim Varsity Football Coach

On Tuesday, Board of ed members appointed Pete Kuczma, who retired as athletic director of Greeley in 2002, to the position of “Supervisor of Athletics” at Greeley.  He will work with junior varsity and varsity sports while Athletic Director Steve Young focuses on modified and freshman sports as well as on developing the Annual Professional Performance Review (APPR) assessments for the athletic department.

Thanks to all those who have generously donated, we are making tremendous progress towards our fundraising goals.  We are well on our way towards modern athletic facilities for our youth athletic program and well-maintained grass fields. We have now have over $600,000 donated to our effort—about half the funds needed to donate a turf field to the school district.

With Rye on the doorstep at least six times, credit goes to goal tender Doug Gusick, who was able to keep Greeley close as the game was tied 3-3 at the half – with goals credited to Ethan Frieder, Alex Scott and Cory Ekstrom.

The Horace Greeley Boys Varsity Soccer team wrapped up its regular season in fine fashion this past week. On Wednesday, October 8th the team visited RC Ketcham and pulled out a thrilling 4-3 victory over the 9th ranked team in Class AA. Greeley twice battled back from 1 goal deficits to eventually win the game. Forward Matt Neuberger scored a hat trick in the game and sophomore Jonathan Gerstein scored his first varsity goal. After trailing 2-1 in the first half, three consecutive goals by Greeley sealed up the victory.

A women’s tennis team from the Birchwood Swim and Tennis Club in Chappaqua, NY won the USTA League Adult 18-and-over 2.5-Level National Championships held at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden in Indian Wells, CA on October 17 through 19, 2014.  Representing the Eastern Section of the US Tennis Association (USTA), Birchwood’s team won the national title by edging out the Northern California Section team from Diablo, CA, 2-1, in the championship match.

Strongman 2014 was held Saturday, May 31st,  at Greeley in front of a record crowd of parents, alumni, and spectators to witness Youth, Modified, JV and Varsity football players along with New Castle Youth Officer & Detective, Daniel Corrado.  They were put through feats of strength, speed, and endurance as they intensely competed in the 40-yard dash, farmer’s walk, shuttle, tug-a-war, 3-cone drill and most challenging event of all—the tire flip.

This fall, when my daughter, a senior at Greeley, sustained an ACL tear at the first game of the varsity soccer season, I chalked it up to the risks of participating in sports.  The following week, another teammate tore her ACL.  And then, over the course of the next three months, several more of Greeley’s female athletes tore their ACL’s – all requiring surgery and a recovery of at least six months.

New Castle 6th Grade Boys win FCBL Tournament Championship

On March 9, the top-seeded New Castle 6th Grade Boys team defeated the Greenwich Flame Red 44 – 27 to win the Fairfield County Basketball League Tournament Championship (FCBL).  With a swarming team defense and balanced offensive attack, New Castle advanced to the title game in bracket play by defeating the Greenwich Stars Blue, Norwalk Youth and Wilton White.

For the second year in a row the Greeley Girls Swim team won the New York state Section 1 Swimming Championship held Nov 4 and 6 at Felix Festa Middle School in Rockland County.  With a total of 339 points the Quakers bested second place finisher, Fox Lane, by 100 points.

Chappaqua, the 14th seed, gave a shock-and-awe performance in Mamaroneck on Wednesday night, delivering the Tigers their only loss of the season after 18 straight wins. Mamaroneck was seeded 2nd in the Section and 2nd in the State—but Greeley showed their skill and determination right from the start.

Taking advantage of a beautiful day, a home field advantage and a loyal following, the Boys Soccer team won against a very solid Ossining team, 6-2 on Monday. The game was a tale of two halves with Ossining coming out strong and capitalizing on a cross goal shot in the 25th minute to take a 1-0 lead. Greeley tied it up before the half when Matt Neuberger connected a pass to Liam Bradley in the goal area where he volleyed the lofted ball.
