Against a very tough Rye team Greeley Lacrosse was bested 9-6 in last Thursday’s game. With Rye on the doorstep at least six times, credit goes to goal tender Doug Gusick, who was able to keep Greeley close as the game was tied 3-3 at the half – with goals credited to Ethan Frieder, Alex Scott and Cory Ekstrom.

The Horace Greeley Boys Varsity Soccer team wrapped up its regular season in fine fashion this past week. On Wednesday, October 8th the team visited RC Ketcham and pulled out a thrilling 4-3 victory over the 9th ranked team in Class AA. Greeley twice battled back from 1 goal deficits to eventually win the game. Forward Matt Neuberger scored a hat trick in the game and sophomore Jonathan Gerstein scored his first varsity goal. After trailing 2-1 in the first half, three consecutive goals by Greeley sealed up the victory.

A women’s tennis team from the Birchwood Swim and Tennis Club in Chappaqua, NY won the USTA League Adult 18-and-over 2.5-Level National Championships held at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden in Indian Wells, CA on October 17 through 19, 2014. Representing the Eastern Section of the US Tennis Association (USTA), Birchwood’s team won the national title by edging out the Northern California Section team from Diablo, CA, 2-1, in the championship match.

Strongman 2014 was held Saturday, May 31st, at Greeley in front of a record crowd of parents, alumni, and spectators to witness Youth, Modified, JV and Varsity football players along with New Castle Youth Officer & Detective, Daniel Corrado. They were put through feats of strength, speed, and endurance as they intensely competed in the 40-yard dash, farmer’s walk, shuttle, tug-a-war, 3-cone drill and most challenging event of all—the tire flip.

This fall, when my daughter, a senior at Greeley, sustained an ACL tear at the first game of the varsity soccer season, I chalked it up to the risks of participating in sports. The following week, another teammate tore her ACL. And then, over the course of the next three months, several more of Greeley’s female athletes tore their ACL’s – all requiring surgery and a recovery of at least six months.

On March 9, the top-seeded New Castle 6th Grade Boys team defeated the Greenwich Flame Red 44 – 27 to win the Fairfield County Basketball League Tournament Championship (FCBL). With a swarming team defense and balanced offensive attack, New Castle advanced to the title game in bracket play by defeating the Greenwich Stars Blue, Norwalk Youth and Wilton White.

Chappaqua, the 14th seed, gave a shock-and-awe performance in Mamaroneck on Wednesday night, delivering the Tigers their only loss of the season after 18 straight wins. Mamaroneck was seeded 2nd in the Section and 2nd in the State—but Greeley showed their skill and determination right from the start.

Taking advantage of a beautiful day, a home field advantage and a loyal following, the Boys Soccer team won against a very solid Ossining team, 6-2 on Monday. The game was a tale of two halves with Ossining coming out strong and capitalizing on a cross goal shot in the 25th minute to take a 1-0 lead. Greeley tied it up before the half when Matt Neuberger connected a pass to Liam Bradley in the goal area where he volleyed the lofted ball.
